One of our rules for this year? Put yourself on.
And that’s not to dismiss the value of connections or relationships but if we’re being honest here, success starts with self: how well you know yourself and how to use your strengths to your advantage.
No artist better translates that awareness into success than Chicago’s own Chance The Rapper, who blew audiences last night at the ESPY Awards. Similar to Auntie Yonce’, Chance is not afraid to make his own rules. AsiahMae, a multi medium creator + co-creator of artist platforms For The Scribes and IllVibeTheTribe was able to capture the lessons we should all be learning from Lil Chano from 79th in this Twitter rant that’s worth taking a second look.
I feel a Chance the Rapper rant on my spirit cause I don’t think enough indies are really watching this man work. He’s a blueprint. This man legit said fuck a label, Ima gonna be about my business & create my own lane. And bam. Lane is open.
There’s a 2013 Rosenberg interview I believe where he said he only has an agent, a publicist & a manager WITH CLOUT. They get shit done. This man has been on the Late Show, SNL, the ESPYs, world tours…without a label. Y’all ain’t taking notes yet?
And brought all his people with him! You see him you see Donnie, Peter, Jamila, Saba. I just…man. I’m so amazed every time.
Read the books. DO YOUR GOOGLES. Learn the industry. Make it your bitch. You don’t need a label. You need talent + knowledge + WORK. I want you to be so smart about your shit nobody can scam you. Get your publishing rights. COPY WRITE YOUR WORK. Know about taxes & booking.
And if you don’t know, ASK. READ. Hire people who know & see your vision, not someone looking at you as a product. You can prosper.
